THESSALONIKI URBAN LIVING LAB

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece, with over one million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, and the capital of the geographic region of Macedonia. The Thessaloniki ULL will focus on the increased impact of environmental barriers on urban citizens’ health.

Key Information

The ULL network of stakeholders will collaborate strongly with the research team to co-design and implement a strategic plan of interventions within the urban context of Thessaloniki, turning the whole city into a “playground” for citizens and policymakers to explore new pathways and good practices to promote health and quality of life for urban populations, facing crucial environmental-related health challenges. Citizens will explore and report repetitive patterns of citizens’ everyday lifestyle and smaller or larger aggravating factors for the urban environment, noticed in their neighborhoods or/and in their city.

Concrete negative and positive examples of citizens’ everyday lives, like streets with increased daily traffic that increases air pollution in that areas, untapped land turned into dumps, as well as environmental initiatives of citizens to aesthetically improve the place they live and to enhance citizens health, quality of life, also improving their education over how to protect the environment, like voluntary recycling groups, co-design of “wallet-parks”, cultivation of vegetable gardens on house terraces, promotion of alternative routes and public transportation means for moving around the city, and other good practices could be the solid ground for a round of public deliberation among citizens and the rest of the stakeholders of the ULL network (academia, industry, policymakers).
