ABERDEEN URBAN LIVING LAB

Aberdeen is a city in the North East of Scotland, with a population of over 200,000 people.

Although Aberdeen has comparably strong figures for walking as a transport mode (to school and work), the urban core is heavily dominated by car traffic, and with mass transit options for commuting (bus and some rail services) run by the private sector.

Key Information

The city has been involved in a number of strategic and practical interventions to foster a transition towards a sustainable future – including investment in low energy buildings and low-carbon transport – but their remains a challenge to form stronger connections between the aspirations of policy and the realities of practice (Docherty et al. 2016).

In practical terms, the city has recently embarked on work to introduce interventions specifically designed to support walking and cycling, initially in response to a pandemic-related need for social distancing. These measures carry the potential to encourage and support behavioural change, which will be explored in the ULL.

The interventions in Aberdeen – to be developed during our co-design activities, will further develop initiatives concerning walking and cycling, and connections with infrastructure and urban planning.

The Challenge

The local challenges are concerned with transformation of the city centre to make it beneficial to people in terms of health and wellbeing.
