STUTTGART URBAN LIVING LAB

Stuttgart is a city in the south of Germany with more than 630,000 inhabitants and an important production location for several companies. Stuttgart’s cityscape is characterized by many hills and valleys such as the „Stuttgarter Kessel“ (Stuttgart basin) and the Neckar valley.

There are green spaces like parks, as well as dense urban development with a high proportion of different buildings.

Key Information

Interventions in the Urban Living Lab will probably take place in summer 2022 and involve changes of urban design in a place in Stuttgart (e.g. temporary blocking for play roads) as well as temporary changes in individual lifestyles (e.g. different use of transportation means).

The City of Stuttgart already startet serveral campaigns to reduce traffic volume, increase green areas in the dense urban development as well as improve health by promoting sports in public places. Through several interventions initiated by research projects or civil society, the city has already gained a lot of experience in the field of traffic experiments or rededications of streets.

The Challenge

Stuttgart still tackels with high traffic volume and therefore resulting challenges, e.g. noise, air pollution as well as competing visions how to use spaces that are currently use by stationary traffic.
