MADRID URBAN LIVING LAB
The city of Madrid is the largest city in Spain with a population of 3.266.126 inhabitants and a density of 5.418,47 inhabitants /km². The city is organized along two main urban areas, an inner and outer ring. there is a significant flow of commuters from suburbs to central area to perform daily activities. Despite of the efficient public transport network, most of the days there is an intensive road traffic across the metropolitan area.
Key Information
When taking into account the broad metropolitan area of Madrid, the overall population increases to 6.6 million. The largest suburbs are in the South, East and West areas of the region according to the progressive growing of the city.
Despite of the efficient public transport network, most of the days there is an intensive road traffic across the metropolitan area, (0.9 million journeys on a typical weekday). Therefore, traffic congestion can become severe leading to increasing levels of noise and air pollutant emissions, such NO2, VOCs PM2.5 and PM10.
The Challenge
The local challenge revolvels around Mardrid’s citizens participation in monitoring NO2 levels at areas surrounding schools.
